Picture Frame Restoration.......Framing

Once conservation work is complete then your painting will require reframing.

If possible use the original frame even if it requires restoration, although cost and appearance may be deciding factors

However, the original frame is often the better choice to preserve the historical integrity of the item.

Using the original frame requires the following procedures:

  • Prepare and repair frame as needed
  • Sand all rough marks and gesso from rebate
  • Remove dust- wipe down with methylated spirits
  • Glue narrow velvet ribbon into rebate- to prevent edge pressure marks on the painting surface
  • Cover the rear with acid-free 5mm foamcore (screws at c.7cm spaces). Seat painting onto tape and hold in place with spring clips or mirror plates (bent to shape)
  • Fit wedge retainers to prevent wedges falling between the stretcher and the painting canvas
  • Fit spacers at base of frame to allow painting to hang parallel to the wall. Use D-ring hangers and cord/ wire as hanging fittings
  • Always hang a painting from 2 two hooks, or even tapped screws for solidity and easy levelling

Naturally, a new frame may require the services of a professional framer who can normally be found locally. They will offer advice as to choice, rebate depth, aesthetics, colour and conservation framing.
